PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Type: Tasked to create an additional feature to a mobile app. Team project for UXDI Immersive Program through General Assembly.

Time: Two Weeks, March 2022

Tools: Figma, Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides), Zoom, Slack

The Problem: Users need a way to quickly record their mood and related context because they want to see trends objectively, as well as a flexible way to document their mental health so they can use it as a tool for introspection.

The Solution: The addition of the mood tracking feature along with tracker personalization options will allow users to record their moods as often as desired, showing trends around moods along with contextual data points, as well as the ability to create longer form journal entries.

DISCOVER

USER INTERVIEWS

Eleven users were interviewed, and the information collected was synthesized using affinity mapping

  • wanting to visualize what they’ve tracked to better find patterns and see what may be working for them

  • needs for flexibility in what and how they document

KEY INSIGHTS

Self-Awareness: All users expressed being fully aware of their mental health and believed their mental health should take priority

Documentation: Users varied between journaling, using an app, or simply noting to themselves in the moment about how they are feeling

Time: Some users want to set time aside for self-reflection, while others with busy schedules want to do quick check-ins

Personalization: Users want to choose how, when , and what they record whether by the mood tracker, journaling, or some other format

DEFINE

PERSONAS & PROBLEM STATEMENTS

The insights provided by user interviews allowed us to discover and create two problem statements and corresponding personas.

Problem Statement: Busy Bea(trice) needs way to quickly record their mood and related context because they want to see trends objectively.

COMPETITIVE & COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

A feature inventory was created to compare different apps used or mentioned during the user interviews.

Key Insights

  • Most apps are subscription based

  • Each app focused on only one aspect of mental health including therapy, sleep, and mood tracking

  • None had a journaling feature, but many offered guided activities or allowed you to take quizzes

DEVELOP

Sketches

Influenced by our problem statements and personas, each team member created sketches in design studio. We then converged elements from our designs into lo-fi wireframes

DELIVERY

Wireframes & Lo-Fi Prototype

We used wireframes to create the low-fi prototype

Busy Bea(trice)

  • Graph to see results

  • Quick check-in with self to log moods

Thoughtful Theo

  • Personalize app by being able to edit tracker display

Usability Testing

Usability tests informed us of a number of changes that would better serve the users.

 WHAT’S NEXT

Our team would like to expand on the filtering options for graphs, specifically to better represent data for days, weeks, and months.

Additionally, we would like create more personalization options for tracker to allow the user to create their own categories to track.
